AAUW Funds

AAUW advances equity for women and girls, through advocacy, education, philanthropy, and research.  The AAUW Funds supports this mission of  AAUW.

EDUCATIONAL OPPORTUNITIES FUND

The AAUW Educational Opportunities Fund provides funds to advance education for women and girls. It is the world's largest source of funding for graduate women and supports aspiring scholars around the globe.  The Fund also supplies money for undergraduate scholarships and for community projects.  In 2009-2010 the Fund had 3,408 Applicants for 215 fellowships and awards for a total of $3,061,000.  The cornerstone of  the Fund has always been  the remarkable energy and commitment of AAUW members, other individuals, corporations, and foundations that make contributions and help raise money for this work.

LEGAL ADVOCACY FUND

The AAUW Legal Advocacy Fund (LAF) was founded in 1981 and provided funding and a support system for women challenging sex discrimination in higher education.  In the ensuing 28 years, LAF has funded more than 100 cases across the U.S. (many have been California cases) and has donated over a million dollars to give plaintiff support to people fighting sex discrimination in higher education through financial assistance and outreach for their cases.  At a 2008 Board meeting, the Board decided to expand LAF to include sex discrimination in ALL workplaces.  In collaboration with the Public Policy and Government Relations department LAF seeks amicus curiae opportunities in cases of discrimination that disadvantage women in the workplace.  LAF is also transitioning toward supporting landmark sex discrimination cases that have the potential to make a difference for all women.

The Legal Advocacy Fund Promotes Equity by:

  • Providing case support for women in sex discrimination lawsuits

  • Educating the college and university community about sex discrimination and offering public education programs designed to improve discriminatory conditions

  • Organizing a network of volunteer attorneys and social scientists who consult on legal strategies, resources, and the merit of current and potential lawsuits

THE PUBLIC POLICY FUND

This Fund supports AAUW Public Policy positions and priorities and also supports Voter Education and efforts to get out the vote for elections.

THE ELEANOR ROOSEVELT FUND

The Eleanor Roosevelt Fund supports research in areas that affect the lives of women and girls.

THE LEADERSHIP PROGRAMS FUND
