Online Branch Goals 2009-2010

Mission:  AAUW advances equity for women and girls through advocacy, education, philanthropy and research.

Goal #1:  Actively advance AAUW mission
Objectives to achieve that goal:

  • Use branch blog to educate members and the public about AAUW issues, posting timely articles at least 3-4 times per month (Responsibility:  Program Co-Chairs)

Action Plan:  All board members are authorized authors on the blog (as of August 2009) and program co-chairs will recruit other interested branch members in September to also write articles for the blog throughout the year. Ask each author to write at least 4 articles during the year on an AAUW-mission related topic.

  • Offer at least 4 branch program discussions on the program listserv  (Responsibility:  Program Co-Chairs)

  • Fundraise for AAUW programs

Action Plan:

  • Advertise and solicit funds for CA state programs, Tech Trek and Speech Trek, twice during the year, in summer and again in late winter/spring, using the blog and following up with branch listserv messages. (Responsibility:  President)

  • Use the branch blog throughout the year to keep branch members informed about the work of AAUW funds (formerly known as Educational Foundation), and use the branch blog and the branch listserv to conduct a fundraising campaign for those funds in October.  (Responsibility:  AAUW Funds [EF/LAF] Chair)

Goal #2:  Grow membership

Objectives to achieve that goal:

  • Create a membership committee to work as a team.  (Responsibility:  Membership Chair)

Action Plan:

  • Contact lapsed members to encourage renewals and compile feedback on reasons for non-renewals to assist future planning of branch operations and programs.

  • Get the state members-at-large (MAL) list and send a recruitment email to that list by late September.

  • Work on outreach strategies using Facebook and other social networks to recruit people new to AAUW.

  • Create interest groups with more opportunities for members to interact.

  • Strengthen branch communications to make membership more meaningful.

    Action Plan:

    • Establish a Tech Committee (per Branch Policy 11.7) in September to evaluate the branch website and enact improvements by December.  (Responsibility:  Tech Chair)

    • Send a monthly newsletter on the branch listserv to follow up on blog postings, inform members of branch activities, and welcome new members.  (Responsibility:  President)

    • Using the welcome message for new members and periodically repeating the information in the monthly newsletters, encourage all branch members to stay actively connected to AAUW (state/national) and to each other in the branch by subscribing to AAUW Action Alerts, subscribing to state website blog, subscribing to branch blog RSS feed, and joining Facebook.  (Responsibility:  President).

    • In the early Spring, evaluate the feedback from members and non-renewals (see #1-a above) to assess branch programs and operations and make recommendations for any changes for 2010-2011.  (Responsibility:  President).

Goals for the 2006-2007 year, set by the board by consensus July 2006:

  • Reach out to prospective members, especially women in the workplace whose needs are not filled by traditional branch membership.

  • Promote networking among members.

  • Keep members and prospective members informed and educated about AAUW priority issues.

  • Focus on public policy advocacy

  • Support the Educational Foundation and Legal Advocacy Fund through up-to-date information on conferences and publications.

Goals for the 2005-2006 year, set by the board by consensus in July 2005:

  • Reach out to prospective members, especially women who are not yet AAUW members.

  • Promote networking amongst members (create a more searchable membership database; plan social gatherings at AAUW-CA convention; and, possible regional meetings).

  • Have at least one action project relating to AAUW's mission.

  • Actively use the branch listserv to introduce AAUW topics of discussion -- a new topic each month.

  • Explore the possibilities of offering electronic/web hosting information and support services, possibly for a fee as a branch and/or EF/LAF fundraiser.
