Legal Advocacy Fund Process in
Equity Award
The Legal Advocacy Fund consists of several components. Some of those
components are Plaintiff Case Support, Campus Outreach Programs and the
Progress in Equity Award (PIE). The PIE recognizes a college or
university program that has resulted in significant progress for women
on campus. Recipients receive a stipend of up to $10,000 and public
recognition throughout their communities, campus, and AAUW.
The 2003 Progress in Equity Award winner is the Students Addressing the
Need for Diversity (S.T.A.N.D) Program at the University of
Maryland-College Park. The S.T.A.N.D program was implemented to
increase the number of underrepresented groups, including women, in the
computer, science, earth, mathematical, and physical sciences. The
program’s wide-reaching components serve undergraduate, graduate, and
faculty of all levels within that college. By providing scholarships
and fellowships, career development and academic counseling, a support
system through mentoring programs, and a host of other programs and
services, the S.T.A.N.D Program has emerged as a leader among the
University of Maryland campus community in developing and supporting
women students and faculty in the hard sciences.
An honorable mention was awarded to the University of Tennessee-College
of Medicine, in recognition of the school’s Committee on the Status of
Women (CSW). Since 1999, the CSW has taken the lead at the University
of Tennessee-College of Medicine in bringing together women faculty to
address career advancement and opportunities within the College of
Medicine. Through initiatives that include the creation of several
campus wide committees to oversee appointments, review policies, and
recommend change, faculty salary analyses, and a broad-based mentoring
program for women faculty at all levels, the CSW has championed
significant change for women faculty within the College of Medicine.
Last year’s PIE runner-up was Pitzer College of Claremont, California
for their family leave policy. |
